This patient showed signs of having diabetes long before receiving an official diagnosis at age 20. This patient is currently a 33-year-old well controlled type 1 diabetic with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) as well as an Insulin Pod (Omnipod). This patient was initially misdiagnosed as having a “stomach flu” and encouraged to increase fluids using beverages such as Gatorade. When he returned to urgent care with worsening symptoms he was again misdiagnosed as having type 2 diabetes and ended up shortly thereafter in a diabetic emergency. The patient was able to avoid Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) but ended up very ill with immediate insulin coverage needed. Once he was established with an endocrinologist, he received a proper diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and placed on a Carb counting insulin ratio. ” Grading requirements: – Explain how the patient, family, or population problem impacts the quality of care, patient safety, and costs to the system and individual.
