The Basics of Semiotic Analysis

As you know from reading our text’s introduction, semiotics is the study of signs. We can identify, for instance, what a facial expression denotes (what it indicates literally) and then what it connotes (what the expression indirectly suggests). If a person is smiling, the denotation is, quite simply, “he is smiling”; the connotation is “he is happy.” Of course, that connotation might change depending on what kind of smile we observe.
