Group Discussion on Slide Presentation: Fraser Part 2 – Group for Discussion Thread 1

Fraser gives insight into the interconnectedness of labor, gender, and environmental struggles. Does she miss anything?
I think that Fraser does a very good job at showing the connectedness of labor, gender, and environmental struggles. However, one thing I think she missed is the impact of gender domination that has caused labor struggles even in today’s society. In her article, she mentioned how at one point, men began getting paid a family wage in order for the women to be able to stay home and do care work. However, the differences in wages and the idea that women are better suited for care work has followed society into modern times. As we talked about last week, care work consists of mostly women because men are thought to be less masculine if they do care work. This gender domination causes care workers to be paid less than jobs that would be done “by a man.”
How do you see the relationship of capitalism with the reproductive sphere, the environment, and state structures?
Capitalism depends on reproduction. Affording reproduction is what allows state structures to run as capitalists. However, the relationship between capitalism and the environment can be conflicting. Capitalism is progressive and often relies on the environment, but the environment has limitations. Much of capitalism is reliant on resources such as water and lumber, which seem constant, but will ultimately have limits to its use.

Fraser does a good job of explaining the interconnectedness of labor, gender, and environmental struggles. She brought up those models of crisis tend to focus only on economic aspects, which they isolate from, and privilege over, the other factors. This quote stood out to me because it highlights the importance of interconnectedness and how economics is not the only problem. All three aspects: labor, gender, and environmental struggles are connected. Because of the ideas embedded and the way society is, many aspects are connected. I see the relationship of capitalism with the reproductive sphere, the environment, and state structures as society works in order to get money which then they have enough money to have kids and support them and then those kids go on and do the same thing. Capitalism creates a reproductive sphere as it provided people with just enough in order to reproduce and for the cycle to go again. As for the environment, the same thing happens. Money is a motivator because of capitalism, so capitalism creates these never-ending cycles.
