(CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5, CC6): For your final assignment, you will put together a mock-training program designed to educate and train new correctional officers working within a female prison. The goal of this training is to help these new professionals understand the female offender, the crimes they commit, the challenges and experiences they face within our criminal justice system, as well as their rehabilitation and treatment needs. As you’ve learned throughout this course, female offenders present with unique needs and challenges, and it is up to you to properly train your “new staff” so they are prepared to effectively support and rehabilitate the individuals they work with.
In order to provide comprehensive training, you and your partner/group must address each of the following in detail:
Part 1: Who is the Female Offender?
Identify and describe the types and prevalence of crimes committed by female offenders.
Apply gender and criminology theories to help explain female offending.
Describe the role of sexism, racism, cultural factors, social class inequality as they relate to society’s perception of women offenders and female involvement in Crime.
Identify the differences and similarities between male and female offenders.
Part 2: Risk Factors
Identify and describe the risk factors for becoming an offender.
Discuss the etiology of female juvenile delinquency.
Describe the role of mental health issues and substance abuse in female offending.
Part 3: Female Offenders and the Criminal Justice System
Describe the experience of female offenders within the criminal justice system (processing, incarceration).
Identify and describe critical issues for women in the criminal justice system.
Part 4: Rehabilitation and Reentry
Identify and describe rehabilitation and treatment needs for female offenders.
Describe gender-responsive programming and why it’s important.
Identify at least two treatment options within the corrections system as well as those available in the community.
Identify and describe the challenges faced by female offenders when reintegrating into society.
Describe the impact that incarceration and addiction have on relationships, personal growth, and social stigma during the rehabilitation process.
Your mock-training program can be in the form of a video or a PowerPoint presentation with voiceover; however, you must submit a reference page for either option.
There is no time limit or minimum slide requirement for this assignment. Your focus should be on making sure you address all four parts along with the bulleted items in detail, using research to support your statements.
