What specific social media formats are you interested in–Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram? What specifically are you interested in researching in relation to social media–education, teen development, parental responsibility, crime? 1) To begin, spend some time (at least an hour) brainstorming. One option is to develop a mind-map. If you are unfamiliar with this technique, google “brainstorm mind map” and view some of the images. Another option is to free write, focusing on your topic and what you want to say about your topic. Some people find it more useful to freewrite or mind-map over a period of two separate sessions (writing for thirty minutes, taking a break, and then writing for another thirty minutes). Whatever method of brainstorming you choose, and for however long, do not discount the significance of this step in the composting process, and be advised that you may want to spend more than an hour: OWL Purdue “How to Outline” (Links to an external site.)
2) Next, visit OWL Purdue online. Your outline should be based on the Four Components for Effective Outlines as found on OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab: OWL Purdue “Outline Components” (Links to an external site.)
3) Prepare your outline. Format should resemble (but be more detailed) the “Sample Outline” as found at the above website; however, you may choose the format for numbering or lettering you’d like to use as well as the length of information: full sentences or shorter “headlines.” Either way, you must demonstrate an ability to organize according to parallelism, coordination, subordination, and division. This organization process demonstrates your ability to logically organize information. Also, be sure to cite sources as you assemble your outline. You must provide source information in your outline to develop your topic–in-text citations.
