Criminal and Juvenile Justice

For your second reflection, I’d like you to considering what we’ve learned in the class thus far, focusing particularly on the material from this week and last week. After you’ve read and watched the lectures, you will go to this website: https://www.samhsa.gov/topics. Scroll down to read through their program list, and pick one topic to explore in more depth. (This topic should resonate with you based upon your own personal experience or an area you want to learn more about professionally.)

When you click the link for your chosen topic, you can read through the information provided on the SAMHSA website. You will then search the Clarkson databases for a scholarly article that relates to this topic. There should be plenty of journals out there, so really search to find an article that is specific to your interests and needs, rather than just the first one you see. (Note: you cannot use a website, book or magazine; it must be a scholarly journal article.)

For your reflection paper, you will:

1) Write a 1-2 page summary of what you learned on the SAMHSA website and the scholarly journal article you selected. What stood out to you? What did you learn that you did not know before? What do you think is most important for health care and community workers to understand?

2) Write 1 page about how you can apply this information in a meaningful way. What did you find most helpful, either personally or professionally? What do you think will be your biggest challenge, and why?

3) In 1-2 pages, address what local resources can you refer patients/clients and families to. Identify and describe at least two agencies or programs in your area that are geared for this specific patient population. What do they have to offer? What obstacles or barriers may make it difficult for people to access these resources? What suggestions do you have to help them overcome these barriers?

Submit your Reflection #2 by midnight Sunday. (No title page required, but you do need a reference page and appropriate APA in-text citations. This paper should be 3-5 pages long of actual text, double-spaced, and include both an introduction and a conclusion. This paper will not be shared with anyone other than your professor.) Also, please remember that I posted an APA Guide for you under Course Resources in the first module.
You will visit that website and look through the different programs/resources they offer. When you click on them, you’ll find more resources available. Pick one specific topic/program to focus on and use the research from that website (it’s your choice).
Next, in addition to that, you will use the Clarkson College library database to find a scholarly journal article that relates to your general topic. It may not be that exact same program, but it should be about the same type of idea/topic you selected.
You will use research from the website and research from the journal article to write your paper. Be sure to carefully follow the directions and rubric provided. The more points a section is worth, the more detail and analysis that is expected. It would be helpful to meet with someone from the Writing Lab as well. I’m not sure if they have any weekend time available, but that is something you should look into, especially so they can help with paraphrasing, quotes, citations and references.
