Film Response Precious

**requirement watching the movie Precious**

1. Mandated reporters and system failure
Precious had contact with a number of people who were mandated reporters. Please identify all the people she encountered who were mandated reporters and SHOULD have reported suspected abuse to the police or CPS. How else did the systems designed to protect Precious fail her?
2. Trauma-informed interviewing
A number of people should suspect, or are directly told, about what happened to Precious. Think about the way that she is questioned by the principal (Mrs. Lichtenstein), and by the welfare worker (Mrs. Weiss). How could approach their conversations with Precious differently to be more aligned with trauma-informed principles.
3. Impact of abuse
Identify two of the consequences of sexual abuse discussed in your readings/lectures that Precious experiences
Dissociation is a psychological defense mechanism in which a person subjected to a situation that they find uncomfortable or intolerable detaches from reality and goes into a fantasy world. It is often used as a coping or defense mechanism when a person is undergoing a trauma such as rape or sexual abuse. Give two examples of dissociation shown in the film.
4. Protective Factors
What protective factors (internal and external) does Precious have? What helps her to develop her self-esteem and resilience?
5. Treatment plan
Given Precious’ previous trauma and abuse, she is at higher risk for engaging in physical abuse of her own children. Identify an evidence-based intervention for parents who are at risk for or have engaged in physical abuse of their children that you think would be helpful for her, and provide a brief description of the treatment and how it could help.
