In the past, intelligence was determined by IQ tests, which measured intelligence solely in reading and math inferring that some students were smart and others were not. How does Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences refute these past notions and empower and challenge teachers to believe in and support the ability of all students to learn and succeed in school?
Referring to the “Integrating Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles on Solving Problems, Achievement in, and Attitude Towards Math in Six Graders With Learning Disabilities in Cooperative Groups” article, summarize the difference between learning styles theory and Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences. Explain at least one way that these two theories work together to foster effective teaching and learning.
In the “Standards-Based Differentiation: Identifying the Concept of Multiple Intelligence for use with Students with Disabilities” article, author Andrea Beam states: “The term differentiation has assorted meanings for various individuals. Some may believe that to differentiate simply means to have separate lesson plans for each student.” Considering that differentiation encompasses much more, explain, in your own words, what differentiation is and at least one way you plan to apply differentiation in your future classroom or setting.
In the same article, Beam adds, “It is crucial to understand that it is not individualized instruction, chaotic, or another way to provide homogneous groups. It is, nonetheless, a way to mazimize student growth by meeting the student where he or she is and, additionally, helping the student progress to higher academic levels.” Summarize why effective teachers make sure effective standards-based instruction and differentiation are one in the same.
