Developing a Management Theory

The assignment for this week is to develop your own management theory. We discussed several management theories (behavioral and psychological) in class and you have researched additional ones on your own. Now it is time to think about what you, as a future manager, would use as your management theory.
Write an essay describing your theory in detail. The following “steps” should help in developing your management theory. Include all of the developmental steps in your essay.
Step #1:
Develop at least five “functions or roles” of management for your theory.
Step # 2:
Develop a statement of purpose for your theory, meaning, why did you develop it? What was missing from any of the other theories that you felt you needed to develop your own?
Step # 3:
What does your theory focus on? You can choose one or several of the topics below, in addition to any others that you come up with. Explain how your theory applies to the topics.
Employee retention
Employee efficiency
Employee hiring, training, development
Productivity
Data collection
Responsibility
Communication
Step # 4:
Explain how managers in the hospitality industry would benefit from applying your theory of management.
Step # 5:
Out of the scenarios below, choose one and apply your management theory to the case and how the case would be solved applying your management theory.
Employees are feeling overwhelmed, stressed-out, and undervalued. They are frustrated by lack of recognition from upper level management. They feel there is no reward for hard work and the overall “mood” is negative.
Lower level managers feel that they are given responsibilities of upper level management that they are not trained to do. In turn, if they make mistakes, they are held accountable. Many times, they feel that they get in trouble for making a decision that they were not given any guidelines on how to solve. They feel that they have no one to turn to and are starting to lose confidence in themselves.
Turnover has been increasing at all entry level positions. It feels that as soon as a position is filled, another one becomes open. Entry level employees are quitting or getting fired at an unprecedented rate.
Employee performance has been dropping and guest complaints have been pouring in. Upper level management can not figure out why the morale has began to decrease, but notes that it began right after a newly hired entry level employee had been promoted to a management position. The rest of the entry level employees had been in their jobs for over two years, so this decline in performance seems “out of the blue” to upper level management.
Step # 6:
Name your management theory! This should be the last step in your thought process, but should be used throughout your essay.
Step #7:
Cite at least three resources and reference other management theories.
