Provide an in depth formal analysis and a brief contextual analysis of each artwork to demonstrate your understanding of the innovations and cultural changes that influenced each style.

#2 Investigate one work of “Baroque” art (1600s) from Italy, Spain or the Netherlands. Identify the artwork by artist, title, materials and date. Provide an in depth formal and in depth contextual analysis. Discuss the techniques and materials the artist used, describe the artwork and explain what compositional techniques the artist used to communicate with the intended audience. Explain specifically how the artwork reflects and/or reinforces ideas about power structures (such as religion, politics, economics, ethnicity, class or gender) in the era it was made.

This question will allow you to demonstrate that you read your textbook and Khan Academy articles/videos. Do not choose Still Life. Use the formal analysis information they showed in the video, How to Recognize Baroque Art. However, do not use the artwork they show in the video. Choose your own artwork as examples.

#3 Demonstrate your understanding of the differences between Neoclassicism and Romanticism. Choose one work (1780 – 1840) of Neoclassic art and one work of Romantic art to illustrate your points. Identify each artwork by artist, title, materials, date and provide a formal analysis of each artwork. Use the assigned scholarly sources to support YOUR conclusions.

This question will allow you to demonstrate a comprehensive reading of PDF’s, textbook and Khan Academy. Do not choose the Grande Odalisque or landscapes. We will discuss those later in their own sections. Hint: Use Google Arts & culture ZOOM feature to see the difference in brushstrokes between a Romantic painting and a Neoclassic painting. Watch the videos in the module to help you with this question.

#4 Write a contextual analysis of any artwork, style or artist ( 1500 – 1840) from a country or culture you have not seen in the modules so far.

This question will allow you to demonstrate that you have been using the assigned resources over the past four weeks. Hint: Find many sections on Khan Academy about arts of Africa, Asia, Mexico and many other countries. Find scholarly sources to answer this question on the SYLLABUS. Depending on your textbook edition, you will have chapters on art from around the world.

There is a minimum and maximum word count. Cut out extraneous words and run-on sentences. Do not write long summaries or introductions that I can read for myself in the sources. Get right to the visual analysis.
