Understanding Engagement
Engagement is the first step in working with social work clients. This is the step that requires you to build rapport with your clients and to understand how you can help your clients meet their goals. Engagement is about more than the gaining an understanding of your client’s needs; it also focuses on the clients become committed to the helping process. To be able to assist your clients in reaching their goals, they need to trust you as a social worker and become invested in the services that your agency provides. It is through this engagement that you are able to create a relationship that leads to meaningful change.

Challenges in Engagement
Social work, unlike many other helping professions, is often working with clients who are not there voluntary or do not want to be involved in services. Often, social workers work with parents who have been mandated to attend sessions as part of their child welfare reunification plan or with clients who have chosen to receive substance abuse treatment rather than go to jail. While these clients are technically choosing to participate in social work services, it is often reluctantly under the threat of punishment for non-compliance. As a social worker, it can be difficult to effectively engage with reluctant or mandated clients. This is one of the challenges social workers encounter when working in agencies.
