Thesis Term Paper Assignment
When it comes to history, knowing how to create your own thesis about a subject is vitally important. A thesis is your own argument, your own perspective, about a subject that is backed up by credible research. If you are arguing a point about something and have no research to support it, then it is not a thesis, but an opinion. This assignment will test your ability to make an historical thesis, as well as your knowledge of primary and secondary sources. As you conduct your research, ask yourself questions about the material: Why was this written? What point is the author making? Does their overall message make sense? Through that critical thinking, you will come up with your thesis and use this paper to express it.
DIRECTIONS:
Choose a topic from our curriculum to make a main argument about. It can be a person, place, event, anything you think is an important part of our history. Make sure it is from a time within our curriculum (1865-Present Day). ANYTHING FROM THE CIVIL WAR OR EARLIER WILL NOT WORK!!!
Research your topic so you have source material to support your argument. You must have at least 1 primary source, and 2 secondary sources.
Construct your argument using the source material you have gathered. Make sure you clearly identify your topic and main argument from the start, and have a conclusion at the end. Your paper must be at least 3 pages, and no more than 5 pages.
Clearly cite your sources within your paper using Chicago format (examples will be provided on Canvas) and have a bibliography of your sources on a separate page at the end of your paper (also in Chicago format). Chicago format means citing with footnotes instead of parenthetical citations. Make sure you know how to insert footnotes into your paper. The library can be significant help in this.
Submit Your paper online through the submission link in this same module. MAKE SURE TO USE A COMPUTER BROWSER, DO NOT USE AN APP IN YOUR TABLET OR PHONE. Make sure to submit your paper in a compatible format(doc., docx., txt. or pdf. documents will work).
GRADING:
Your grade will be based on the effort you put in to your paper. Make sure your paper is the proper length, relatively free of spelling and grammatical errors, properly states and supports your thesis, and has the proper citations of sources (Chicago Format). Your paper must show that serious effort was made at arguing your main point (your thesis). Do not just summarize your sources, but use them strategically and constructively to show that your argument makes sense. Also, avoid using first person terms in your paper (I, me, you, us, etc.)
Remember to do your best, as this paper is worth 200 points, a major part of your final grade.
