This analysis paper will engage a few abilities in the course: 1, 2, and 4. Note that the fourth ability is really all about language execution, while 1 and 2 target specific skills, such as reading and analysis at the college level.
This is a rhetorical analysis paper. It asks the student to examine a text and to identify, describe, and evaluate an author’s method of inquiry and argumentation. In this paper, identify, describe, and evaluate how Plato applies the argument framework (problem, position, arguments, support . . . see Chapter 1 in the text). Use your work in the Week 3 threads to practice your approach. A student’s thesis could be built around one of these questions: how does the use of allegory serve Plato’s needs in convincing Glaucon about the nature of good leadership? Does Plato’s method and analysis accurately describe the nature of human liberty (hint, a liberal education is supposed to “liberate” the individual so that they may practice civic virtue)?
