When asked about how I would define psychology, I typically answer that it’s the scientific study of why we do what we do, think what we think, and believe what we believe. This ties in closely to the study of nature versus nurture. How much of what we do is because of our genetics and how much is because of our experiences and upbringing?
I think that our belief system (what we believe about ourselves, love, success, money, other people, our world, our work, why things happen, our faith) can often be traced back to our past experiences. Some of these experiences are huge but some are just the everyday events. Some are good but some are really tough. In this assignment, I want you to reflect on at least five events that you feel have shaped you as an individual. Examples may be graduating high school, a relationship you are in or have gotten out of, buying a car, travel, friendships, hard times, parents’ divorce, sibling relationships, a move, etc. I want you to identify the event and write about 3-5 sentences about the event discussing why you chose that event and how it shaped your belief system about yourself and/or your world.
I am a mandated reporter so if you report thoughts of suicide, homicide or an experience with child abuse (as the victim or the perpetrator), I am required by law to report those statements to the proper authorities. Other than those specific exceptions, your paper is for my eyes only and is not for presentation to the class.
