DEFINITION:
“A synthesis draws conclusions from, makes observations on, or shows connections between two or more sources. In writing a synthesis, you attempt to make sense of the ideas of those sources by extracting information relevant to your purpose. . . . Often you will work with more than two sources; certainly you will do so in a research paper” (Ackley 106).
OBJECTIVE:
not to present individual full-text summaries of every source, but rather to incorporate relevant points from all of them in a new essay that is designed to represent a variety of opinions, as well as your own point of view.
PATTERN OF DEVELOPMENT:
Effect (as in Cause/Effect). Thesis statement: The fears of AI’s impact on jobs/economy are main point 1, main point 2, and main point 3.
PROCESS:
I. Generate ideas for the topic: the objective is to present a thesis statement that is based upon your examination of a variety of views.
II. Synthesize multiple sources: assemble parts into a coherent whole.
A. Make a Chart of common ideas (see handout).
1. Read each source and note reasons for his or her beliefs.
2. Chart reasons and names: synthesis begins here.
3. Distinguish among reasons: some may overlap.
B. Outline: Decide upon a sequence of topics, main points, for each body paragraph.
III. Evaluate sources: decide upon the ones to include in your essay. Minimum of three for each body paragraph. You will have to know what these sources say to achieve this, hence, the Chart.
IV. Write rough draft.
A. Pattern of development is cause, as in cause-effect.
B. Construct Introduction:
1. Explain or summarize issue.
2. Introduce sources in a one- or two-sentence summary.
3. Present thesis statement: The fears of AI’s impact on jobs/economy. . . .
C. Construct Body Paragraphs.
1. Construct your own topic sentences, generalizations. Use thesis to do this.
2. Use some explanation of your own, based upon your observations. This is not a book report. The body paragraphs should be a mixture of your three or more sources and your own observations about the topic.
3. Introduce sources in a variety of ways.
4. Present sources in a variety of paraphrase, summary, and quotation.
D. Conclude essay with a summary or relevance of topic.
V. Include a Works Cited page, LBH, chapter 46.2 model 27, 9c, or 7c.
VI. Revise and Edit. There should be no “you” or “I” in this paper. Write in 3rd person.
VII. Proofread.
