example
From the beginning, Nora displays deceitful childlike behavior. She feels powerless in her marriage to the authoritarian Torvald, so she tells lies and disobeys his orders like a rebellious child. This is illustrated by incident with the macaroons. Nora is happily eating her treats until Torvald enters. Suddenly, she shoves the macaroons in her pocket. When Torvald questions her, she emphatically denies having bought any macaroons: “I should not think of going against your wishes” (Ibsen). Like a father, Torvald has forbidden Nora to eat sweets, and she, like a child, outwardly obeys him to avoid conflict, while secretly ignoring his rules and doing as she pleases when he is absent. Thus, it is through this duplicitous behavior, Nora rebels and creates an illusion of independence from her husband’s rigid rules.
