Sustainability principles permeate many traditional design and building practices across the world and have ensured the survival of communities and the preservation of the natural environment. Such methods often involve building with locally available materials in ways that respond to local climate conditions. The underlaying principles of vernacular architecture are applicable and transferable to contemporary design and have been applied and redeveloped within modern contexts.
