Here is a story about me.
I had a really “great job.” The money was great and position, because of the union was for life. However, I realized the work environment was toxic. People used that freedom of tenure to be mean to each other. I was pretty sad all the time. My wife noticed how distracted I was. How I started to think of work as work. In all of my years teaching, this has always been a career, not a job. I was told by a colleague that the place I worked locked us in with “Golden Handcuffs.” She said, “Almost everyone here is miserable, but they pay so much, we all stay.”
That was a punch in the face.
Within six months of that conversation, I took massive pay cut and the guarantee of a raise every year and full tenure to come to SHU. I will never regret that decision even though I know, I will lose out on half a million dollars or more over my lifetime. I know my life will be better lived for being here. No handcuffs on me.
