Write a paper that needs to address some aspects of the board topic of crime, deviance and justice. Do a paper on any one (or more) of them and their work related to these topics – Socrates, Thomas More, Martin Luther King, Immanuel Kant, Durkheim. Provide your own definition of justice and back up that perspective with solid arguments/examples/references. Consider Durkheim’s perspectives on deviance and offer your own insights, again backed up with solid arguments/examples/references. Examine the issue of money as it is related to justice (and cite the works of Quinney or other conflict criminology theorists). You are all to read Liberty v. Order and consider the thoughts and ideas expressed in that piece. Review Packer’s crime control v. due process paradigm. Look at the works of others who have addressed the topic of (John Rawls, Hyman Gross). Discuss the concept of the compromise conundrum (ends justify the means – Machiavelli) and/or the idea of founding, un-founding and de-founding in the context of what is crime from a procedural standpoint. Expand on Will and Ariel Durant’s thesis that justice systems are just stop-gaps or band aids that buy time adding in some thoughts per the violent era of the Vikings vs modern Sweden/Norway/Denmark. In that discussion, you would need to review the works of Ted Robert Gurr and Manuel Eisner. Remember that you are to do extensive outside reading and have at least 8 to 10 references in this paper, including some rough combination of at least 4 to 6 outside journal/magazine articles, books, and web-based articles and at least 4 to 6 items from the class materials on the web. The papers are to be a minimum of 3,500 words, not including references (note the word count at the bottom of the page).
