Topic
Within the context of religious studies, the word “myth” is used to refer to stories that “relate basic truths of a religion” (textbook 1-4c on page 11 & 2-3e on page 42). Myths are one of the most common characteristics of indigenous religions. Visit The Big Myth Website to explore some myths (This is a free site, but you do have to have “flash” in order to use it). Clicking on the red dots that appear on the map will play the myths. Alternately, you can see many of the myths at this The Big Myth YouTube Channel. Select one of the myths to share with the class (DO NOT select The Old Testament, Hindu, or Japanese options as they are each covered within major world religions later in the course).
Initial Post
– Title your initial post with the name of the myth you are highlighting.
– Provide a brief summary of the story and what it means for the people in that culture. In other words, how is this myth explaining the workings of nature, origins, and/or the meaning of life and death?
– Provide at least 200 words of content followed by at least 2 MLA (Modern Language Association) format research source citations outside of your textbook: MLA Citations.
Responses
– Expand upon the threaded post of another with further thoughtful comments, observations, and/or questions. There is no specific word count here, your replies simply need to meaningfully add something to the conversation with sufficient depth of discussion.
– Maintain your thread regarding those who make prompt and meaningful replies to your post.
– Be sure to subscribe to any posts you make so you are alerted when someone responds to them.
– All of this needs to be done in the context of furthering the conversation regarding religious terms, ideas, and concepts related to the topic.
Ensure that you provide original writing (do not copy the words of your sources), proper grammar, correct spelling, and appropriate punctuation in all of your posts.
