The article revisits the disruption theory proposed in 1995 by one of the authors and points out some common pitfalls in the theory’s application, how these arise, and why correctly using the theory matters.
The argument is that managing innovation-growth is important for business and we must manage innovation effectively if we are to grasp its true nature. Executives with a good understanding of disruption theory tend to forget some of its subtler aspects when making strategic decisions. Disruptive innovations originate in low-end or new-market footholds, and get started in two types of markets that incumbents overlook. The authors discuss whether Uber is in fact a disruptive company. As the example of Uber shows, identifying true disruptive innovation is tricky.
