ACT UP used art to communicate in the streets. This was one of the first movements (if not the first) of a “deeply oppressed people whose lives were at stake to have included such a large group of designers, advertising professionals, studio artists, marketers, and publicists.” (A Political History of Act Up New York, 1987-1993: Let the Record Show, by Sarah Schulman).
