Sex refers to the anatomical and other biological differences between females and males, while gender is a social concept which refers to the social and cultural differences a society assigns to feminine and masculine characteristics based on biological sex. A third concept, sexual orientation, refers to a person’s preference for sexual relationships. While traditionally in the U.S., these categories have been perceived as binaries (male/female, masculine/feminine, heterosexual/homosexual), increasingly, each category is perceived as existing on a spectrum.
Identify a recent or ongoing news story that deals with topics of sex and gender, gender (as identity and/or expression), and/or sexual orientation. Provide at least one source (any citation format will do) or link to the story. Describe how the sides or position(s) implied or explicitly stated in the story reflect binary and/or spectrum-based logics. It is possible that a story features one or both. What are the implications of the logic(s) applied? In other words, how are the individuals in the story and society overall affected by the ways sex, gender, and/or sexuality or depicted in the story?
