There are 5 different deductive forms (Modus Ponens, Modus Tollens, Hypothetical Syllogism, Disjunctive Syllogism, and Dilemma) which can be translated into symbolic form. Come up with your own original example of one of these arguments and do the following:
Write it out in ordinary language as a regular passage.
Rewrite the argument in natural logical order, with the premises on top and the conclusion on the bottom, with a line separating premises and conclusion
Replace all statements with statement indicator letters
Replace all connective words with the appropriate connective indicator symbols
In module 3 we are only looking at translating deductive argument forms into symbolic format. Why do you think that is? Can we translate inductive arguments into symbolic form? Why or Why not?
Finally, what purpose does converting ordinary language into symbolic format accomplish? Are there any real-world applications for turning perfectly acceptable ordinary language statements into simple claims of true or false combined with symbolic operations?
