Goals/purposes of this assignment:
(1) To look at the similarities (to compare) or to examine the differences (to contrast) in order to understand better
as well as to practice these specific critical thinking skills;
(2) To improve the use of tag phrases (attribution phrases or signal phrases) and quotation marks as well as citations;
(3) To practice introducing and interpreting quotations in an academic context in a way that supports a thesis
statement.
**Students should use the FOUR STEPS for quoting method discussed in class and on the handout. But students
should also study the Gardner handout for specific ways to handle unfamiliar situations regarding quotations, such as if
a word or two needs to be eliminated
Your essay must integrate at least one quoted passage, but it cannot include more than three quoted passages. Your
essay must have a thesis statement and an essay map or directional. Your essay must explicitly identify which course
reading materials you are engaging in. Your essay must be typed, double spaced, and follow all the rules on the syllabus
for formatting. Your essay needs to be seven (7) paragraphs or more. It should be approximately three or four pages.
It needs to be submitted before the due date and time which works like midnight on New Year’s Eve. Your essay
must include a works cited list with two entries.
