1. Read: Chapter-7 in Barker & Jane, Uma Narayan “Colonialism and its Others;” Jean-Paul Satre, “Colonialism is a System;” and Derek Walcott, “The Caribbean: Culture or Mimicry”
2. In all three articles, this idea of power in creating identities is prevalent. The powerless or colonized may have their identities stripped, but as seen in Walcott’s article, new ones will always emerge, and are ever-changing. Is there still some sort of agency that colonized are left with in forming their identities? If identity is a “process” and colonialism is a “system”, how that impact and shape colonized and colonizer identity(ies)? Consider why Jean Paul Satre argues “Colonialism as a system”? Does colonialism still exist today?
