Contemporary or recent conflict (or debate or initiative) concerning different uses and understandings of space.

Assignment description:

In the first part of the course, we read about and discuss different uses and understandings of spaces and some of the debates, initiatives, or conflicts that might result from these differences.

For your Paper 1, research and discuss the example of another contemporary or recent conflict (or debate or initiative) concerning different uses and understandings of space. These are some questions to help you start thinking about your topic or example:

Who are the players, and what are some of the perspectives, histories, ideas, and issues in the dispute? What are some of the consequences for the people involved?

How does this conflict, initiative, or debate – and the power relations that accompany it – compare to the examples from the course.

How are anthropological ideas and methods helpful in explaining these complex issues and divergent claims?

Your paper

should be 5 pages long, be double-spaced, 12 p. fonts, with regular margins
must include a bibliography; you are expected to correctly reference all your information and quotes
must have an argument; clearly state your argument in the introductory paragraph
must use at the very least 1 additional anthropological academic source (additional = not a course reading or material)
must compare the issue/place/situation you are researching with one of the situations/issues listed below; make sure you include a discussion of the following:

– the article “Planning from time immemorial” by H. Grant, Sparrow, L. Grant, and Scoble

is expected to go beyond what is discussed in the lectures or tutorials. DO NOT replicate those points or arguments, they can only be the starting point of your work!
