Description – 3 possible topics (pick one from below):
Describe a gift had an impact on you. This could be a gift you gave someone or a gift you receive. It could be a literal gift (like an instrument) or a metaphorical gift (gaining confidence). It could be priceless or come in a box from Amazon. It could also be the gift of life you received from your parents or gave to your child.
Describe your goals. What are you doing here at LC? What do you hope to “be when you grow up”? Either pick one major goal and how you hope to get there – or pick three smaller goals for each body paragraph.
Describe someone (or an event) that has taught you something valuable about yourself or life in general. Focus on the dominant impression or give three examples of this valuable person/event.
Point of view: Essay can be in first person (using I, me, we, etc), but should not include the second-person ‘you.’
Thesis: Thesis should describe the gift, goal, or person/event and the effect in one or two concise sentences.
Organization: This could be done in a few different ways. You could do three paragraphs describing life before, during, and after. You could pinpoint three ways the gift or person/event changed you. You could analyze the steps for one big goal or three smaller goals. Or you could take a different approach as long as it is logical and flows from one topic to the next.
Logistics (should be in MLA format):
Heading in upper left corner with your name, my name, class name, and date
1″ margins and double spaced
Standard 11 or 12 point font (Times, Calibri, etc – nothing too fancy)
No extra spaces between sentences or paragraphs
Creative title that is centered below heading and before the intro paragraph (same font as the rest of paper – no bold, underline, or large letters)
Needs clear thesis in the introduction paragraph that is UNDERLINED
Should be a minimum of 2 full pages and not more than 5 pages
The essays should follow an intro-body-conclusion paragraph.
Essays with no clear organization or one long paragraph will not pass
