Smarthinking Tutorial Transcript
This is a tutorial to show you how to access and use Smarthinking. You can access
Smarthinking from Blackboard by clicking on the Smarthinking item within the course module.
You should be logged in automatically.
You may be asked to enable pop-ups and to do a systems check. Choose “Click Here to
Continue.” Once in Smarthinking, you may be prompted to generate a token. This will allow you
to connect your account to the app, if you want to use it. Otherwise, you can proceed without
generating a token by clicking the X to close the dialog box or by clicking “Ask Me Later.”
The Smarthinking dashboard looks like this. The top bar has a number of links. In order to
submit your essay for review by a Smarthinking tutor, select “Writing Help.” Then select “Essay
Center.” Complete the form by providing your course name, the title of your assignment and
details about your assignment to guide your tutor. Be sure to include the citation style (APA,
MLA, Chicago, etc.) in the assignment description box. For assignments in this course, you
should use MLA. Next, you will need to select the two main areas you want assistance with on
your paper. Then, select the type of tutor you would like to review your work.
Finally, upload your writing assignment. Double check your file type before submitting. There is
a link in blue that takes you to instructions on how to change the file format, if needed. Once
you’ve filled out the form and attached the document, click Submit and you should hear back
within 24 hours.
Smarthinking will send you an email notification at your Rivermail address when your document
has been reviewed. You will need to access Smarthinking again and download your feedback
document in order to submit your feedback document to your instructor.
You can access your document in Smarthinking by clicking on “My Sessions” from the
Smarthinking home page. On the left hand side, select “Archives.” Click on the title of your
essay, scroll down the page and click on “Download Tutor Response File.” Save the file to a
location of your choice on your computer so that it will be easy to access and submit your draft
with Smarthinking feedback.
