This activity will deepen our understanding of cultural competency and cultural equity. It will also prepare us to complete Journal 3, part 1.
As noted in the introduction, culture is more than ethnicity, language, dress, food, holidays, and visible aspects. Culture embraces the shared behaviors, values and beliefs of a group, it is dynamic and is passed down from generation to generation. Cultural competency involves knowing yourself, knowing others, celebrating similarities, recognizing differences, and negotiating those differences in mutually satisfying ways. Cultural Equity involves practices that support all cultures.
Review the cultural iceberg, reflect on the things that are easy for others to see about you, and things that are hard for others to see about you. How does this “create” a picture of you and your culture. Think about a close friend – what do you see about them? Think about someone who is challenging to be with – what do you see about them/ What might be good to know to make to less challenging to be with them? Cultural Iceberg.png
