You will be evaluated on how
well you comply with each requirement. This assignment should take not
less than 5 (five) pages.

1. Small companies are perhaps
more vulnerable to the loss of key employees and the resulting loss of
organizational knowledge. What steps can a small company take to mitigate this
potential loss? Answers might include requiring well-kept documentation of job
duties, extensive cross-training, key employee insurance, etc.

2. In addition to key executives,
there are other positions in a company that may be considered critical, or
whose loss will be difficult for the company. What will happen if a network
administrator leaves? What customers or contacts would the company lose if a
sales representative leaves? What other positions can you name where a loss
would have a potentially significant negative effect on the company?

3. When a major U.S. city
recognized that over 70% of its IT staff was eligible to retire within a three-year
period, they immediately put into place a plan to start bringing in new IT
staff and pairing them with the experienced veterans. Because their IT systems
were almost exclusively developed in-house over 20 years, organizational IT
knowledge was critical, and those required skills could not be obtained on the
open market. Does this suggest another area that should be addressed in crisis
management and contingency planning? In which plan or document should this
issue have been addressed already?

4. Discuss the importance of the
after-action review and “lessons learned” documents. How will these help to improve
the BC plan?

5. What do you think would be the
issues for a small “Mom & Pop” type business? Is BC planning within their
financial ability to perform? What options does a small business have?
