For this written assignment, you are asked to engage with, interpret, and apply some core idea in the work of Emile Durkheim. Pick a quote from one of the texts assigned in Unit I that seems to represent a key concept or theory Durkheim developed. This should be one of the key concepts discussed during lectures, but the specific quote and your engagement with it are up to you. Summarize the quote in your own words and then either engage with it critically, or apply it to some concrete situation or social phenomenon.
To receive a passing grade your paper must have these elements present:
An explicit quotation from class readings for Unit I.
A restatement of the idea contained in this quote in your own words.
A discussion of its relevance in some area of human social life, or a discussion of its limitations.
Papers must be submitted via Blackboard in pdf format before the end of the semester. They should be 2-3 pages in length, use standard fonts and margins, be 1.5 or double spaced, and should be spell-checked and corrected for grammar. All quotations should be cited and marked with quotation marks. Any material in the essay that is drawn from another source without attribution is plagiarism and will result in a failing grade.
