1. Explain how symbols (as representations of a specific group of people) and meaning produce and reproduce racism in sport?
• Consider how the symbols construct ideas about race, and produce and reproduce
institutionalized racism through the myth of natural talent, which positions Black
athletes as physical entities. You can also argue the ways that racial stereotyping, such
as racial stacking or racialized mascots, contribute to perpetuating racism in sport.
• Consider activism and the ways in which athletes use their platform, where the athlete
themselves are symbols, and how athlete activists are promoted or criticized.

2. Why and how are racial minorities siloed into specific sports (across all of “sport”) and
what are the outcomes of that as athletes and as leaders?
• Consider sociocultural influences on sport choice (or why a specific race might align with
a certain sport in current culture and how that comes to be).
• Consider how race-based access and treatment discrimination (across all of “sport”)
affect opportunities as athletes and as leaders?
