·
Summarize the Ted Talk in one to two paragraphs.
·
Select one scenario (news headline) in the Ted
Talk and analyze the situation using the concept of perception. Consider the
person who called the police. How is this person perceiving the situation? Write
out the steps of the perception process (selection, organization, interpretation, and
negotiation) that are (or probably are) occurring in this scenario/headline. Provide
detail! Feel free to search for that particular headline and read the entire
story. That might help you to understand what is happening. You might need to
make some educated guesses on what is happening in the perception process.
·
Using the same scenario/headline that you
selected, consider how the person who called the police could have used the
Perception Checking strategy with the person they thought was a threat. Write
out a Perception Checking Statement that could have been used instead of
calling the police.
·
Please explain how Attribution Theory could play
a role in this scenario. Be sure to define the theory and demonstrate an
understanding of the theory. Explain how the fundamental attribution error
could be affecting this situation (external/environmental vs.
internal/dispositional factors).
·
Consider how perception causes us to communicate
in certain ways. Consider the role of stereotyping in interpersonal
communication. How is our communication affected by perception and stereotyping?
Is this good or bad? Please explain and provide examples.
·
Analyze your own perceptions/biases and evaluate
how they affect your interpersonal communication skills. Be very honest in this
section! There will be no judgement from me! It may be related to race, gender,
sexual orientation, culture or religion, lifestyle, hobbies, careers, appearance,
etc. I think that many of us say that we perceive everyone equally and in a
positive way, but I would argue that every one of us has biases and perceptions
that affect how we communicate with certain individuals. Try to seek out what those
biases may be for you and how you could change them in order to communicate
more effectively.
·
Apply theories of perception of both self and others in interpersonal
communication situations
·
Apply the principles of nonverbal communication in various interpersonal
communication settings
·
Analyze the impact emotions play when interacting within interpersonal
relationships
·
Consider how intercultural communication affects interpersonal
interactions
·
Consider
the Attribution Theory and determine how it plays a role in the scenarios
presented in the Ted Talk.
·
Analyze
one’s own perceptions/biases and evaluate how interpersonal communication is
affected by those biases.
