these questions below are pertaining to my placement, I just finished interning for 12 weeks with the 18 and up adults and not switching to the newborn-17 year old. you can write about either or but please not both .
For your journal entry this week, you will consider challenges in assessment that you can expect to encounter in your field placement and in your professional practice.
As part of your journal submission, be sure to address the following:
Explain how you have addressed assessment or how you might address assessment during your field education experience.
Explain any potential challenges for assessment during your field education experience.
Determine how/if the DSM-5 is used in your field practicum, and how the DSM-5 is likely to be used as part of your professional practice.
Reflect on how your personal experiences and affective reactions may affect your assessment of a client in your field placement.

Understanding Assessment
After you build rapport and engage with your clients, the next step is assessing your clients (or client systems) to determine their needs and goals. As a social worker, you are concerned with the person within your environment, which means that as part of the assessment, you need to consider the environmental factors that impact your clients – such as poverty, access to care, and poverty. You must also consider the strengths of your clients.
For example, you are working with a mother who has had her children removed and is struggling with substance abuse and depression. The mother is committed to having her children returned and is currently working part time. Currently, she is living with a friend, but has been saving money for her own apartment. What are the strengths you can identify for this client?
When helping your clients build upon their strengths, you must also remember the dynamic nature of assessment. As your professional relationship with your clients develops through your work, it is important that you continue to assess your client and the progress (or lack of progress) that is being made to ensure that your interventions are effective. Assessment is not something you engage in only with your first meeting – assessment continues throughout the helping process and until you have terminated your relationship with the client.
