Explain the points made in “Consciousness and the brain”.

Answer TWO of the following (remember to post at least two replies in addition to your answer):

1. Explain the points made in “Consciousness and the brain”. Explain how the speaker defines consciousness. Why is consciousness so difficult to study? Discuss the myths about consciousness the speaker offers, including a discussion of each one. Do you agree with his views on consciousness? Why or why not? Compare and contrast the way consciousness is discussed in the video with the way consciousness is discussed in the textbook.

2.Describe the ideas presented in Robbert Havekes’s “Sleep deprivation and memory problems”. Discuss the biological functions of sleep according to these videos. How do they compare to the functions of sleep offered in the textbook? List and describe the stages of sleep and discuss how sleep patterns change across the lifespan. What are some potential mental and physical consequences of not getting enough sleep? Do you personally get enough sleep? If not, can you identify any of these consequences in your own life?

3. Summarize the main points of the Hypnosis” web article. List and discuss the false claims about hypnosis included in your textbook. As a clinical intervention, is hypnosis a science based tool? Is a scientific foundation necessary for something to be used as a psychological treatment? Why or why not? Do you think the same way about medical interventions? Why of why not? Describe the relationship between hypnosis and the placebo effect. What are some potential dangers of hypnotherapy?
