Explain why slavery not well defined in Tennessee before 1800? Why was slavery not as strict before the 1830s? How and why did slave laws change in Tennessee, especially between 1830 – 1860? Who fought to try and free the enslaved in the state? What were conditions like for African Americans who were free and not enslaved before the Civil War?
From the “How Blacks Communities Formed” chapter (attached), please answer: How did former slaves experience “freedom” during and after the Civil War? What were the major social, political, and economic elements that helped them experience “freedom?” In other words, how did former slaves begin to rebuild their lives after the Civil War?
