Reflection Paper (10% of Final Grade)
Due Monday Feb 21st
Write a reflection paper of about 600-800 words detailing the
story told by your elder/s and feel free to include images that
they might like to share and that might inspire your artwork.
The reflection paper will not be graded like a formal paper, no
footnotes, citations, or formal structure needed.
However it must contain the following three parts:
1. Introduce the elder/s, their story/ies and which theme or
themes relate to their story. (A paragraph will do.) Make
sure you ask your interviewee whether they wish for their
name to be disclosed, full name or just first name, or
maybe an alias. And make sure they know that stories will
NOT be posted publicly, just shared in the class.)
2. Retell their story.
3. In a separate section, reflect on how that story relates to
one of the themes above. Does it relate to particular key
terms or readings? If so which ones and why

Family World History Project
World history is not just the history of “the world,” but it is
also our history, how the “world” has shaped the experiences of
our “family” – our ancestors, loved ones, and dear friends. The
late twentieth century is still very much alive in the stories
of our elders.
Your first task in this assignment is to interview one or
several “elders” – these could be parents, grandparents, elderly
friends, or a friend’s elders, anyone with whom you have shared
stories – and to ask them to reflect on how any of the following
events in world history shaped their experiences (note that they
coincide with lectures in the course and feel free to share
about the course with them). Ideally select one of the following
themes (lecture titles) as a focus for the story sharing:
The Cold War (1945-1991)
Nuclear Power
Post-1945 Economic Development (incl. “Great Leap Forward” in
China)
New Nations, Third World Politics
Economic Development, Modernization (1960s-70s)
Migration & the Diaspora
Wars of Insurgency or Counter-Insurgency
The Space Race
Environmentalism
The Digital Age
Civil Rights Protests/Peace Movements
