Health and Human Rights Proposal and Research Paper

Topic: Police Brutality Against Black Males in the Context of Health and Human Rights
Project Proposal (2 pages): Write two page paper that explains the topic. What area will you explore for the project? That is, will you explore housing (the right to shelter, homelessness), prisons, death penalty, or another topic. What article of the UN Declaration of Human Rights does it address? Name the article and explain how your topic addresses this article. Explain why is this a human rights issue. What is the setting? That is, what will be the geographic focus.
Create an annotated bibliography of at least five academic sources. Give the full reference for the source and write three to five sentences (for each) explaining why it is relevant to your topic. Be sure to write about the articles rather than using the abstract. The reference librarians can assist in locating academic sources.
You may use APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian style. You’ll find useful style guides at Purdue University’s on-line writing lab: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html

Topic: Police Brutality Against Black Males in the Context of Health and Human Rights
Final Paper (11 pages): Each student will write a final paper (minimum of 11 pages, 3000) as a human rights report. Begin by selecting a topic for the report and narrow with a setting (location). Here are a few suggestions, but there are many other possibilities: environmental racism (in Houston, in Texas, or another region), Food deserts/food apartheid, stigma and mental health, access to medical care, health disparities and coronavirus, migrant detention. The paper can focus on the city of Houston, the state of Texas, the United States, or another region in the U.S. or in the world.
The report will include several sections as described here.
· Overview of the available data on the issue: what statistics exist? What is scope of the issue? Who is affected? Describe one case of abuse that exists, making use of academic sources, existing human rights reports, newspaper articles, or other popular sources or reports.
· Literature review including synthesis of at least six academic sources on the topic. (Your previous annotated bibliography is the building block for the literature review). Be sure to name the authors as you discuss them.
· Human Rights Organization: Research at least one organization that is addressing this issue and explain how it is working to document abuses and address them. Use the organization’s website to locate information for this.
· Inequalities: How do structural inequalities (racism, sexism, poverty, or others) connect to human rights abuses? (Be sure to connect to our class readings here).
· Future Research: What additional information is needed in order to write a comprehensive human rights report on this topic? How would you go about collecting this data? That is, would you conduct interviews (how many? With whom?), conduct site visits? Carry out archival research? Conduct a survey? Conduct an observation? Focus groups?
· Recommendations: What needs to be done to address this abuse as connected to health? How might it be prevented in the future? It is common for human rights reports to address the local, regional, national, and international levels in making recommendations.
Included is one human rights reports to show their structure. However, parts of your assignment are significantly different.
