Guidelines for policy paper

Health
Policy Analysis
A policy analysis provides students the
opportunity to analyze a specific social issue within mental health nursing.
Students are expected to write an academic paper 5-8 pages, focusing on a
current and relevant issue in mental health nursing within a global context.
This represents 35% of your total grade in PSYN 3210 course. Online submission
to Moodle.

The paper is to be an example of the
student’s:
• ability to define a problem or social issue within mental health
nursing
• summarize findings by incorporating theory and course content to
underpin the policy analysis including local, national and global health
concepts.

identifying the role of an RPN:
discussing future implications and the student’s suggestion for change

demonstrating critical
thinking

The issue
must be approved in advance. Please email your initial ideas for a policy topic
to your instructor.
1.
Write a 5-8 page double spaced paper describing a policy issue with
health implications, doing so in a way that fulfills the following criteria.
Cite your sources within the paper and provide references at the end as a
separate page. References do not count in the page limit and must be 5 years
ago or less.

policy? What do you want the decision maker to do?
b.

why is he/she/they the appropriate person(s)?
c.

problem? Who does it affect? Why is it a problem?
d.

least two solutions to the problem. Make sure they are supported by facts and
are well referenced.
e.
Evaluate the pros and cons of
the solutions. What are the pros and cons for both solutions. Look at potential
problems with implementation.
f.

solutions as your recommendation. Argue why this is the best solution to the
problem. Back up your argument with data.
g.

this issue? Explain why they would support or object to your
recommendation
h.
Summarize

2.
Most decision makers
won’t read 5-8 pages of research. So please prepare a one page written summary
of your paper. Include the following key points.

a.
Address the summary to an
individual – a specific policymaker. This person must be in a position to take
action on this issue. The policymaker could be a legislator, school board
member, clinic administrator, etc – it just depends on your issue and who is the
best person to take action on your recommendations. Explain why you are
addressing this person.
b.
Succinctly describe the issue
and who it affects (why the decision maker should care)
c.
What policies have been tried
before?
d.
Offer at least two solutions to
the problem. Include the pros and cons of the solutions. Look at potential
problems with implementation.
e.
Choose one of the proposed
solutions as your recommendation. Argue why this is the best solution to the
problem. Back up your argument with data.
f.
Who are the stakeholders for
this issue? Explain why they would they support or object to your
recommendation?
Include a brief summary of 2-3 points the
decision maker should remember
