Introduction and Alignment

Philosopher George Santayana said, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” We can learn so much about a particular subject by studying its history, and education and the teaching profession are no exceptions. In Module 2, we will present historical information regarding education and the teaching profession in order to trace significant events, innovations and developments and determine how these aspects have affected and continue to affect the profession of teaching today. As you prepare to become a teacher, this information will contribute to developing your own philosophy and understanding of education and the teaching profession.

Referencing and utilizing the information from the 2 resources above, please discuss the following:

Select a particular time period in the history of education and the teaching profession. In the time period selected, what are some distinct similarities with education and teaching in current times?
In the particular historical time period you’ve selected, list examples of innovations and/or significant developments that have occurred in education and in the teaching profession?
How has the professional development of teachers evolved throughout history? (i.e. cite some significant changes that have occurred in the teaching profession?)
Based on aspects and events occurring throughout the history of education and teaching, what predictions can you make about the professional development of teachers in the future? (i.e. what professional expectations will teachers need to be prepared for in the future?)
