Paper #2 – Refugees in American and in St. Louis
In this assignment students will address the following questions and support their ideas and opinions with facts, statistics, quotes and other data from a minimum of 3 outside sources in addition to the course textbook. There should be a particular focus on info from Chapters 11 and 12, however, there are lots of reference points throughout the book. Cite your sources within your writing AND create a Work Cited Page.
1. While the United States is said to be a melting pot, some say it is a tossed salad? What do you think? Why do you think this?
2. Given that St. Louis is a middle of the road, Midwestern city, it has been selected on many occasions to resettle refugees from different countries and conflicts in this metropolitan area. Where have these refugees come from?
3. Explain the ethnic make up of St. Louis.
4. Identify three challenges these groups may experience, or may have experienced, while settling in St. Louis and the United States? Name and explain.
5. What resources are available in the St. Louis area to assist refugees (or immigrants in general) with building a new life in St. Louis and the United States?
6. How would you describe the culture of St.Louis area? (refer to the definition of culture to help you answer this question). However, since this is an online class some of you may not live in St. Louis metropolitan area. If so, how would you describe the city in which you live?
