The Fascist Doctrine
1) “In the Fascist conception of history, man is man only by virtue of the spiritual process to which he contributes as a member of the family, the social group, the nation…”
What does this mean to you?
2) Why does Fascism reject democracy and individualism?
Mein Kampf – On the Use of Propaganda
3) What did Hitler claim were the keys to successful propaganda?
4) In your own opinion, is there a way to counter propaganda?
Orwell’s Review of Mein Kampf
5) Consider Orwell’s assertion that Hitler had “grasped the falsity of the hedonistic attitude to life.” And “Whereas Socialism, and even capitalism in a more grudging way, have said to people ‘I offer you a good time,’ Hitler has said to them ‘I offer you struggle, danger and death,’ and as a result a whole nation flings itself at his feet.
Do you think Orwell is right? Do you think that people want or need conflict in their lives? Do people derive meaning from struggle? Has modern society embraced hedonism? If so, does this put us at risk of succumbing to something like Fascism?
