Argument Essay
For this next essay you will need to find an image
(photograph, advertisement, poster, etc.) that makes a visual argument (tries
to persuade the reader). You can find an image that relates to any argument.
While analyzing the image you should consider what areas relate to logos,
pathos, and ethos.

Structure
of the Essay:
Introduction-must
have attention-getter and thesis (what the visual argument is and the points
you are covering—logos, pathos, and ethos)
Body
Paragraphs-you should have at least 3 (one for each category of information you
are analyzing).
Logos
(possibly the printed text)
Pathos
(possibly the image presented)
Ethos
(possibly who is behind the visual)
Conclusion-must
restate thesis and offer a thought on the effectiveness of the visual
argument
Questions
to consider:
Logos-What is the purpose of the visual? Does it use
evidence? What does that evidence mean? How does it support the topic? Does it
give reasons or logic? Identify examples and explain.
Pathos-What does the image consist of? What is the
intended emotion based on the visual? How does the visual connect to the
reader? Do any of the words have an emotional impact? Identify examples and
explain.
Ethos-Who is behind the visual? Does the organization
or individual seem credible? How so? Does the visual quote any credible
sources? How does this help the visual seem trustworthy? Identify examples and
explain.
Is the visual argument effective based on its use of
logos, pathos, and ethos? Explain.
