Structure of the Paper/Project
Start with a short description of the conflict then tell the story of what led up to the current situation
considering most (but not necessarily all) of the following:
Landscape morphology
Natural resources
History of the location, its population, and economic uses of land.
How the value of land or its uses have changed and why.
The groups (“stakeholders) involved in the conflict. What are their interests? How much power do they have
to influence the outcome and why?
Trade-offs between conservation and economic development.
Meanings associated with the landscape (for different interest groups).
What property rights are involved?
Public perception of the conflict. Media coverage?
Legal cases brought or pending.
The environmental or ecological implications of the outcome.
Conclude by assessing the conflict’s current status and possibilities for resolution.
Papers should be well structured into clear subsections and illustrated with at least one map and at least three
images (photos or other). Style should be narrative and journalistic but substantiated with a variety of sources
(at least eight). Length should be about four pages of text, 1.5 spacing. The total length will depend on the
number and size of your maps and images. Cite your sources, preferably in APA or Chicago style.
