For the research project, you will write a literature review pertaining to microorganisms that cause human disease. There will also be an associated presentation, which you will record using Canvas Studio (How to Use Canvas Studio). For this project, 1 bacterium, 1 virus, and 1 parasite will be selected. One of the microorganisms selected must be rare/uncommon/unusual – a rule of thumb is if the organism is little discussed/not discussed at all in our textbook, this would work.The paper will have the following requirements:
Cover Page – Name, title, abstract (that will unify the paper)
Body – for each of the three microorganisms selected:
Describe organism
phenotype, physical characteristics, morphology, etc
Describe epidemiology
who affected, how transmitted, where is found
Describe associated disease/infection
effect on body and relevant organ systems
symptoms, manifestations, outcomes
Describe treatments
standard treatments (antibiotics, drugs)
control methods (disinfection, sterilization, etc)
incidence of resistance to control/treatment methods
References – a minimum of 9 peer-reviewed references must be used
APA formatting
no more than 3 can be textbook/manual sources (such as class textbook, Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, etc)
6+ references must be peer-reviewed from scientific journals
EBSCOhost (MBU library), google scholar, pubmed are examples of searching sites to use

My research project will be on YAWS disease, caused by the bacterium treponema pertenue.
