Media Matrix

Purpose: In this assignment you will practice the skill of applying theoretical concepts to real-world examples. This skill requires an understanding of the material we have been covering this semester, as well as the ability to connect these ideas to observations in the world and media around you. In addition, you will take your skills one step further by evaluating the theory and concepts in this matrix. By reflecting on the theoretical concepts and examples you use in the matrix, you will develop your own strengths and weaknesses of each theory, demonstrating your ability to think critically about classical theory. The Application Matrix is not only an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and skills of applying and evaluating theory, but will also give you practice connecting abstract ideas to everyday observations, which is a skill you can continue using to add meaning and think critically about media, consumption/advertising, and the world we live in as you move forward.

Task:
1. Begin working on your Media Matrix by selecting a form of media (advertisement, TV show, film, etc.) or a website to analyze.
2. Choose three classical theories we have covered to apply to the media or website you’ve chosen. You can use the same media/website for all the theories, or a different choice for each theory.
3. Next, identify examples of the theory in the media or website you’ve chosen. Determine which concepts from the theory are represented by the examples you’ve observed.
4. After downloading a blank copy of the Media Matrix, save it to your computer and begin filling it in. List the name of the concept in bold or italics followed by a brief description of the example you observed in your media/website. You will repeat this using three different concepts for each theory.
A blank copy of the Application Matrix can be downloaded at this link for you to fill in and complete. Save this to your computer and upload it once complete.

Criteria: Your Application Matrix will be graded based on:
1. Accuracy (how accurately concepts are applied, examples fit and are logical, concept is matched with correct theorist, etc.)
2. Thorough (all boxes are complete with different concepts in each and different theorists have been used for each row)
3. Thoughtful evaluations of theory (Strengths and Weaknesses are unique and demonstrate a good understanding of the theory/concept and reflection)
