Click on ‘language/speakers,’ pick any language other than English, and pick a speaker from that language. Please include the URL to your speaker at the top of your paper.
Some links to languages may not work, just pick a different one!
Make sure to pick a speaker whose recording includes a phonetic transcriiption (circled in blue below).
Compare the pronunciations of both speakers.
If they sound too similar, try looking for a speaker with a heavier accent!
You may use both what you hear and the IPA symbols in the phonetic transcriiption. Don’t worry about symbols you don’t recognize, just do your best!
Pay attention to the age, gender, languages, and other biographical data listed on the left. How might these affect the speaker’s accent?
Try to find specific sounds that are different—for example, one could say [pliz] or [plis] for “please,” or [wɛnzdeɪ] or [wɪnzdeɪ] for “Wednesday.” Are there any sounds the non-native English speaker lacks or adds?
Record yourself reading the ‘Please Call Stella’ passage.
Listen to yourself, and compare your pronunciations to the two other speakers.
