Personal Leadership Elevator Speech
Elevator speeches are brief statements developed to effectively yet efficiently describe
something and its value proposition. In this assignment, students will develop a response to the
question “What do you do as a healthcare leader?” or, for those not presently in a healthcare-
related leadership role, “What do you intend to do as a healthcare leader?”
While the Internet contains numerous postings and other resources on elevator speeches,
students’ submissions for this assignment must be based on Tim David’s Harvard Business
Review piece posted to the Online Classroom. In developing her or his elevator speech, each
student must:
Identify which question she or he is answering (i.e., “What do you do as a healthcare
leader?” or “What do you intend to do as a healthcare leader?”); and
Compose:
o A problem question—up to 25 words;
o A noddable—up to 20 words; and
o A curiosity statement—up to 30 words.
Note: While students may wish to develop verbal slap or curiosity follow-up statements for their
own use, neither should be submitted as part of this assignment.
In developing their elevator speeches, students may want to consider the following questions.
What motivates you as/to be a leader in healthcare?
How do/will your backgrounds and/or abilities influence you as a leader?
What areas of impact interest you most as a current/future leader?
Personal Leadership Elevator Speeches must be double-spaced, and written using Times New
Roman 12, They will be evaluated according to their:
Fulfillment of assignment requirements: 40%;
Quality of presentation (i.e., writing and formatting): 30%; and
Originality and impact: 30%.
