Promise That You Will Sing

Please answer both of the following questions in your first discussion post for the week.

1. In Chapter 5: “The Spiteful Chant,” Miles Marshall Lewis traces the history of the relationship between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. How did the interaction between the two artists influence Kendrick’s work? In other words, why does Lewis think the relationship is important? What is the larger point he’s trying to make about rap as an artistic practice?
2. How does Lewis draw on his personal life and knowledge of hip hop history to inform his writing about Kendrick Lamar in this particular chapter and/or throughout the book? (please give at least two specific examples)
3. Also, please incorporate your thoughts on either last week’s short film Good kid, m.A.A.d city (2014) and/or the 2016 Grammy performance (under this week’s optional material) into at least one your posts. It doesn’t have to be the first response, meaning you can address the book in your first post and the video at some point later in the week.

Your first post will be an answer to my discussion question(s). It should be a minimum of two paragraphs.
It’s fine if your initial post is longer than two paragraphs, but please make sure you’ve thought about and answered the question in the most thorough way possible.
Please include at least a 2-3 direct quotations from the texts in your first post (as evidence for whatever claims you make).
